The Others |
"Jammed
tight and sweating hard, the fevered throng at the
East
Coast Blues Festival let The Others know that
it was well worth their long road haul up from Adelaide.
Like the Stones, whose record of longevity they share,
these r&b titans thrive in an environment of immediate contact,
feeding off the energy and driving it upwards with hot,
hard, stinging licks and a blues sensibility born out of an implicit understanding
of the music's essentials.
After more than 40 years at the coalface they are the masters
who inspire the apprentices." |

"He feels like black coffee and milk He sounds like sandpaper and silk" Andy Cowan is one of Australia's most experienced and talented singer/songwriter/pianists in the Soul-Blues-RnB idiom, Andy has been described justifiably as the "King of the Keys". He ripples, rolls and rocks through original compositions with passionate and soulful vocals, wrapping the audience in his energy and weaving an emotional and spellbinding magic. Andy has evolved into a refined and sophisticated songwriter/performer, arriving at his music after a long and winding journey - the resulting confidence, maturity and taste are well earned and deeply embedded. |

Mississippi Shakedown contains 12 fine blues compositions. The Mixing (Jeff Cripps) and Mastering (Paul Bryant) is superb, the musicianship is clean, tight and hard hitting, and the vocals are clear and distinct. Through it all is the omni-present slide guitar. The songs range from straight-8 Blues, to Mambo Blues to Rockin' Blues, to Fast Shuffle Blues and Slow Shuffle Blues. If you get a chance to go to Australia, make sure you check out Mississippi Jeff Cripps and his group the Shakedown Boys: John Gannon on Bass and Derek Smith on Drums. When you get this album make sure you heed the warning: This Album was not created to be played quietly. |

Jaimi Faulkner |
LAST LIGHT is a great listen - from the rocking "Reference Tone", the propulsive "Troubles Him", to the deliciously tender duet with Mia Dyson, "Hold On Babe", Jaimi and his band - Nathan Adair on bass, Daniel Farruga on drums, Sam Cope on keyboards, with help from the mighty Chris Wilson on a couple of tracks, and great production and sound from Dave Manton - treat us to a soulful and remarkably assured first album. Directors comments - As one of the judges of the Melbourne Blues Performer Of The Year Awards I felt Jaimi had all the ingredients to win. His songwriting, his guitar playing and stage performance all merge together to mesmerize the audience. He delivers as a seasoned performer well beyond his youth and I am glad he is one of the winners representing Australia at The International Blues Awards in Memphis in 2008 cause he has what it takes to win...Jillian Jake |

Michael Charles www.myspace.com/ |
Born
in Victoria, Australia, Charles picked up his first guitar at the tender
age of five and a spark was ignited that fired him on to produce numerous
singles and albums totaling 21 releases thus far. In the height of his
Australian career, Charles received a message from a long time hero of
his, Mr. Buddy Guy. Mr. Guy's management requesting Michael to come to
America and perform on stage with Buddy at Legend's! A true highlight
of his career, this two week trip has lasted for 18 years. In 2006, with
the intention of renewing his ties with the rich Australian music scene,
Charles called on his long time producer and personal friend, Greg Williams
of Dex Audio Melbourne Australia to co-produce his latest release "I'm
Nobody's Fool". Like his other 20 releases, "I'm Nobody's Fool"
boasts MC's prolific songwriting and this time also highlights his phenomenal
guitar performance, probably getting you the closest you could ever get
to him and his live sound on stage. |

|
The Detonators reinvent the styles that made the mid to late 1950s such a vital time in music's history. Their inimitable sound is infused with the driving energy inherent in the music of their heroes - Chuck Berry, Little Walter and Hound Dog Taylor. Top Night Out has a heavier, more rocking sound than their previous albums, while managing to stay true to their Blues, Rock 'n' Roll sensibilities. Their ability to produce a distinctly Australian sound while staying within both their genre and sound is testament to the strength of their songwriting and musicianship on this album. Stand out tracks on Top Night Out include:" Time Machine" which perfectly captures the mentality of the retro addict; "EH Leatherette" a description of youthful joyriding in an old Holden; and a rockin' reworking of their perennial stage favourite "All Of Me (All Over You)". The album closes with the title track "Top Night Out" and gives the feeling of having experienced a live performance.

On The Level |
Front
man Dave Gillam’s strong husky vibratory vocals suits this rockin
boogie outfit, it just seems to get better with every performance. Hot
Texan boogie lickin guitarist Dave " Tex" Bates will keep you
electrified, Jim Awran on Bass & Ian Bones Ironside on Drums, and
with Steve Connolly as dedicated harp player. On
The Level's new album "Bottom Of The Bottle" is out now, earning
rave reviews, building on the success of their previous release Blues
in E.
"This CD is a bit different from the last one," said Dave.
"We have doubled our studio time & have concentrated on arrangements."
Listeners should expect a couple of acoustic, Eagles-style numbers, a
big gospel-hallelujah production with a 30-part gospel choir in it, and
of course plenty of Rocking Boogie.
